Janet Miliaris

Lawyer

Janet is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Windsor. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1993.

Prior to attending Law School, Janet studied sciences and maths at the University of Toronto and holds a Bachelor of Science degree.

Since being called to the Ontario Bar in 1993, Janet has been entrusted to provide strategic and pragmatic guidance to her clients. Her passion for advocacy began as a first-year law student at the Crown Attorney’s in Toronto prosecuting non-criminal offenses. Significant litigation and corporate law skills followed as a summer student and articling student with an international Bay Street law firm located in downtown Toronto.

Janet is committed to providing excellent personal service to her clients in a respectful manner. Having dedicated her practice to family law since 1996, she understands that family law clients are best served when they have a close working relationship with their counsel as they move through their separation: she answers her telephone when clients call.

In addition to guiding clients from separation to settlement, Janet has significant experience representing family law clients in contested Matrimonial and Estate proceedings in Courts throughout Ontario. She has developed particular expertise in negotiating marriage contracts and cohabitation agreements and is often referred to clients from corporate counsel to prepare marriage contracts for their clients.

This experience benefits clients in achieving a fair and dignified settlement in the Collaborative Family Law process. Janet is trained in the practice of Collaborative Family Law. The Collaborative Family Law practice allows divorcing and separating couples to put family first and reach creative resolutions without stepping foot in a courtroom. This alternative dispute resolution process allows parties to work together in order to resolve their legal issues amicably while maintaining mutual respect for the family unit.

Janet has lectured on family law topics throughout her career and has been a guest lecturer at the Schulich School of Business in the MBA program. Her commitment to family law issues extends to volunteer work as Janet is a past Director and the past President of the Board of Directors of The Etobicoke Children’s Centre, a mental health center providing mental health and autism services to children and their families.

Janet is a trained mediator and is a member of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts.

Janet is conversationally fluent in Greek.
